Statement by Senator Jack Reed the REAL ID Act
WASHINGTON -- Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) stated, I oppose inclusion of the REAL ID Act in the Supplemental Appropriation now being considered in Congress. The REAL ID Act has nothing to do with appropriations for our men and women at war or emergency economic aid. This proposal, inserted by the House of Representatives, has never passed the Senate nor has the Senate Judiciary Committee considered it.With little debate or review, the REAL ID Act would make a significant change in immigration and asylum policy and dramatically impact states that already have regulations and laws addressing state drivers licenses. It would also dramatically raise the standards for receiving asylum, threatening to eliminate relief for immigrants most in need of protection. The REAL ID Act is inconsistent with our nations commitment to international agreements relation to refugees, and it violates some of the rights that we, as a nation of immigrants and a global leader on human rights, cherish. The insertion of the REAL ID Act in the Supplemental Appropriations is an inappropriate way to debate major changes in immigration law. Congress has a responsibility to address immigration issues in a comprehensive, thoughtful, and deliberative way that truly controls our nations borders, benefits American families, and enhances our national security.
