WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after President Joe Biden announced his nomination of Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be the next Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement:

“Admiral Franchetti is a distinguished leader whose vision and skill would be invaluable to the U.S. Navy and the President. If confirmed, she would be the first woman to lead the Navy and to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and I am pleased that we have finally reached this moment.

“Admiral Franchetti has served the nation admirably for nearly four decades, with command experience at all levels of our military and across the globe. As the current Vice Chief of Naval Operations, she has demonstrated remarkable wisdom and understanding of global maritime power, helping to set the Navy on a path of generational transformation.

“The next Chief of Naval Operations must be a disciplined leader and effective strategist who can steer the Navy to meet the significant challenges ahead. I look forward to reviewing Admiral Franchetti’s nomination and holding a hearing to discuss her vision for the service.”
