WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after news broke that former President Donald Trump was indicted by a grand jury in New York, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:

“Nobody is above the law.  A grand jury of ordinary citizens heard evidence and voted to indict – that is how our legal system works.  I urge those who claim to be pro-law-and-order to actually allow law enforcement, prosecutors, and a jury of Donald Trump’s peers to do their jobs without partisan interference.  There is no need to rush to judgment.  The facts and evidence will be publicly presented and the heavy burden of proof rests with the prosecution.  Donald Trump will have every benefit of counsel and a fair opportunity to be heard.  The Constitution guarantees Donald Trump’s rights despite his seeming indifference to the rights of others.”
