Reed Statement on Trump’s Attempt to Backtrack from Comments at Putin Press Conference
WASHINGTON, DC – Twenty-four hours after his disastrous press conference with Vladimir Putin, President Trump today backtracked from controversial remarks he made yesterday about Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election. Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee and an ex officio member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement:
“This is too little, too late and simply not credible a full day later. President Trump’s incoherent and shifting stance suggests he is either insincere or he committed an act of diplomatic ineptitude. If President Trump accepts U.S. intelligence then why did he side with Putin on multiple occasions while they were standing shoulder to shoulder? And why does he continue trying to equivocate now? He is adamant there was no collusion, yet equally adamant about avoiding the Special Counsel. President Trump sat down with Vladimir Putin yesterday, now he should sit down with Bob Mueller.”
