WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after the Carter Center announced the passing of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, 96, the wife of former President Jimmy Carter, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:

“Rosalynn Carter was a remarkable First Lady and an incredible life partner for President Jimmy Carter.  Married over 77 years, theirs was a love that was built to last.  And they made it their life’s work to help and uplift others.  Together and as individuals, in both public and private life, they succeeded beyond measure.  They embodied the American values of family, community, faith, and civic pride and responsibility.

“America owes a debt of gratitude to First Lady Carter for championing the Equal Rights Amendment and working to make mental health care more accessible for all.  She was a trusted advisor to her husband and a national leader in her own right.

“Rosalynn Carter set an example of hard work, honesty, grace, and care for others.  She led by example and her example continues to inspire us.  May we all be so lucky to give and receive the kind of love and compassion that Mrs. Carter showed and bestowed unto others each and every day.”
