WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after the passing of U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:

“Frank Lautenberg lived a remarkable life and was a remarkable legislator and statesman.

“He fought for our nation in World War II and continued fighting for New Jersey and working families everywhere in the U.S. Senate, serving not one but two tours of duty in this chamber.  He played a leading role on so many key issues: helping to make our environment cleaner, our roads safer, and our communities healthier.

“Frank’s parents immigrated to this great nation of ours with very little.  Their son went on to earn a fortune as a successful businessman and later become a United States Senator.  “Only in America,” Frank would fondly say.  There was only one Frank Lautenberg.  We are grateful for his service.

“Our thoughts are with his wife, Bonnie, and the entire Lautenberg family.”
