Reed Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Trump Immunity Case
PROVIDENCE, RI – Today, after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling on presidential immunity -- and ensured further delays and impediments to former President Donald Trump facing his federal criminal trials before the November election -- U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement:
“The Court’s ruling puts the presidency above the law in a way that jeopardizes our democracy. It makes it easier for a President to abuse the powers of the office with impunity. How can that mean anything other than more corruption with less accountability? It is dangerous for any court to open the door to that behavior.
“The American people know that Donald Trump abused his power on multiple occasions. They saw with their own eyes that he tried to subvert the will of the people during the 2020 election.
“Trump has made it clear that he will seek retribution against political opponents. He has even mused about being a dictator. Regardless of the aberrant views of this Court, I trust American voters to make up their own minds about his fitness to serve in public office.”
