Reed Statement on Limited AUMF to Help Combat ISIL
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after the White House provided Congress a proposal for a new, more narrowly tailored authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) against Islamic State fighters and affiliated forces, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:
“While overdue, this is a thoughtful proposal. The Administration is not asking for a blank check for military operations. This framework more precisely defines the President’s authority to combat ISIL. This is a workable approach and I hope it helps create bipartisan consensus. Now it is time for Congress to debate, refine, and ultimately vote on a new AUMF.”
