WASHINGTON, DC – Following the passing of Colin Powell—a retired four-star general and former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:

“Colin Powell was the epitome of selfless service, courageous leadership, and uncompromising integrity.  He will be remembered as one of our nation’s very finest military and diplomatic leaders, and I am deeply saddened to learn of his loss.

“A distinct honor of my life was the opportunity to work with and learn from Colin Powell.  He committed himself wholly to the well-being of the United States and advised generations of presidents, diplomats, military leaders, and lawmakers.

“Colin Powell was resolute and honorable throughout his life and career, and America is fortunate to have benefitted from his leadership.  I offer my deepest condolences to Alma and his family.  I am saddened by his loss, but grateful for his many contributions to our nation.”
