WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a senior member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS), which oversees federal funding for the U.S. Department of Justice, today met with Attorney General nominee Loretta E. Lynch.

Ms. Lynch is a two-time United States attorney who is currently serving as the top federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York, the office that handles federal prosecutions in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and parts of Long Island.

Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Ms. Lynch, 55, earned her undergraduate and law degrees at Harvard, receiving her A.B., cum laude, in 1981 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1984.

If she is confirmed by the full U.S. Senate as Eric Holder’s successor, Ms. Lynch would be the first African-American woman Attorney General of the United States.

“U.S. Attorney Lynch is extremely talented and well qualified.  She is a strong choice to lead the Justice Department.  I hope the Senate will give her nomination fair consideration without further delay, and I look forward to working with her,” said Reed, who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1982.

The Attorney General nomination must first be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee before a vote on final confirmation by the full U.S. Senate.
