Reed: Judge Cannon’s Dismissal of Classified Documents Case an “Ideological Decision That Undermines Confidence in the Independence of Federal Court System”
PROVIDENCE, RI – U.S. Senator Jack Reed today issued the following statement on Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon dismissing the classified documents case against former President Trump:
“This is another ideological decision that undermines confidence in the independence of the federal court system, rejects higher court precedents, and lets Donald Trump off the hook for obstructing justice and compromising some of America’s most closely guarded secrets.
“Judge Canon used tortured reasoning to dismiss the case and deny Americans an opportunity to hear the evidence against Donald Trump in a court of law.
“Judge Cannon has a track record of being reversed by appellate courts when reaching highly suspect, sweeping decisions such as this one. I hope the Justice Department swiftly appeals and she is once again rebuked by a higher court.
“My Republican colleagues have strongly endorsed independent counsel in other cases, in order to ‘restore faith in our governmental institutions’ and ‘avoid the appearance of impropriety’. My colleagues’ approach makes sense for the prosecution of Donald Trump, and Judge Cannon should have applied their reasoning here.”
