WASHINGTON, DC – Nearly 24 million people – including 3.2 million new consumers -- have signed up for Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans for 2025 so far, and more are expected to choose policies before open enrollment ends on January 15 in most states through the federal marketplace, Healthcare.gov.

Rhode Islanders in need of affordable coverage options have until the end of February to pick a health plan under the state-run HealthSourceRI.com (HSRI) marketplace.

The record breaking number of ACA enrollees for 2025 is already nearly double the 12 million people who signed up for 2021 coverage during the final open enrollment period of the previous administration.

Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed, who voted for the ACA, which President Barack Obama signed into law on March 23, 2010, issued the following statement:

“The Affordable Care Act continues to save lives, slash the uninsured rate, and positively impact Rhode Islanders and Americans nationwide. There is no doubt the ACA is working for American families, especially for those with preexisting conditions.

“No one should have to worry about going bankrupt if they end up in the hospital. And having affordable, quality health insurance through the ACA’s health coverage provides real benefits and peace of mind.

“In Rhode Island, the ACA – through HealthSource RI – has decreased the uninsured rate by more than two thirds. Today, the Ocean State has one of the highest insured rates in the country with about 97 percent of Rhode Islanders having affordable access to quality health care.  Furthermore, thanks to the boost to the advance premium tax credit (APTC) that Democrats delivered through the American Rescue Plan Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, thousands of Rhode Islanders are saving about $930 each year on their coverage.

“While the fate of the law under the incoming administration is uncertain, I will continue doing everything I can to strengthen the ACA and build on the progress we’ve made by capping out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, allowing Medicare to use its purchasing power to negotiate better prices for prescription drugs, and lowering health care costs for American families.”

The latest HSRI enrollment numbers from this fall noted: “Currently a record-high of more than 46,000 individuals are enrolled in health plans through HealthSource RI, as well as over 8,000 more through the small group options offered by HSRI to employers in the state.”  New numbers for the state will be announced after February 2025, “when individuals and families can enroll in, change, or renew their health and dental coverage at HealthSourceRI.com/OE or by calling 1-855-840-HSRI (4774).”
