Reed Condemns Targeted Hammer Attack on Speaker Pelosi’s Home That Left Her Husband Hospitalized
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, news reports indicate that an intruder broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco, CA shortly after 2:00 a.m. local time and violently assaulted Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), with a hammer. According to the latest reports, the assailant was looking for Speaker Pelosi, who was in Washington, DC at the time of the attack. Mr. Pelosi, 82, is in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect in the attack – a 42 year-old known to embrace hate speech and election conspiracy theories -- is in custody facing attempted homicide charges and an investigation into the assault is ongoing. In the aftermath of the attack, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:
“This was a dastardly, premediated attack on Speaker Pelosi’s home. It reflects an unacceptable rise in political violence that must be condemned by all. We’ve got to break the cycle of polarizing hate speech and outright lies that feed into these types of attacks.
“We stand in solidarity with Speaker Pelosi and send our best wishes to Mr. Pelosi for a speedy recovery.”
