WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement after the FBI today acknowledged it has extensive evidence that the North Korean government organized the cyber attack on Sony Pictures:

“The North Korean government’s cyber attack on Sony is a serious national security issue.  It goes beyond a movie and it demands an appropriate response.  We don’t want to see copycat attacks like this in the future.

“Cyber security is a critically important issue.  We need to better protect the American people and our digital assets in both the public and private sectors, and we must do so in a smart, balanced way that also protects our civil liberties and the free flow of information on the Internet.

“As the incoming ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I am committed to strengthening our national cyber defenses.  I look forward to working with incoming Chairman John McCain (R-AZ) in addressing this very critical national security priority.”
