WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida released his nation’s new National Security Strategy and other strategic planning documents, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:

“Japan’s new National Security Strategy is a bold, forward-looking blueprint for protecting Japan and promoting peace and international stability in the Indo-Pacific.  It reflects changing security dynamics and the enduring strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance.

“This represents a logical extension of our nations’ shared vision for diplomacy, security, economic partnership, and strategic engagement.

“Security challenges on land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains continue to evolve.  Japan has a comprehensive roadmap – and expanding capabilities -- to defend, deter, and counter security threats and challenges ahead.

“I salute Prime Minister Kishida’s vision for his country.  Japan’s intention to increase its defense spending to two percent of GDP within the next five years signals strong leadership and serious commitment to defending Japan’s vital interests, deterring future conflict, and defending democracy.

“This is an important moment for the U.S.-Japan alliance and marks a new era of cooperation and strengthened ties for our nations, as well as others who share a commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
