Senator Reed, the Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee, was joined by Congressman Jim Langevin at an event to salute the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipbuilding team and their contributions to national security. The U.S. Navy recently awarded a $22.2 billion multi-year contract to General Dynamics to build nine new Virginia-class submarines, with an option for a tenth submarine that would potentially raise the overall contract value above $24 billion. Senator Reed included federal funding in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to advance the procurement of Virginia-class submarines. The contract will ensure additional work for thousands of skilled laborers and bring millions of dollars in business to small suppliers across Rhode Island and the region.
